Athlete Awards

Section CanSkate Award

The purpose of the Section CanSkate Athlete Award is to recognize skaters who have shown enthusiasm and dedication to the CanSkate program throughout the skating season.

This award will be presented to one person in each of the nine Skate AB|NT|NU Regions with an overall Section Winner selected by the Skate AB|NT|NU Awards Selection Committee.

The Award will be presented to the Section winner at the Section Annual Awards Banquet.

The Region and Section recipients must meet the following criteria:

Criteria

  • Must be enrolled in CanSkate for the current registration year
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude
  • Demonstrates an eagerness to learn and improve skills
  • Is co-operative
  • Participates fully

Section Star Athlete Award

The purpose of the Section Star Athlete Award is to recognize skaters who have demonstrated determination and commitment to the Star program. Recipients of this award have displayed passion for the sport and have achieved success throughout the season, not only within the Star assessment structure, but also with personal skill development and growth.

This award will be presented to one person in each of the nine Skate AB|NT|NU Regions with an overall Section Winner selected by the Skate AB|NT|NU Awards Selection Committee.

The Award will be presented to the Section winner at the Section Annual Awards Banquet.

The Region and Section recipients must meet the following criteria:

Criteria

The winner of this award must not have registered or competed in a Podium Pathway (Pre-Novice or higher) category at a Sectional qualifying competition in the current skating season.  The winner should also reflect the essence of the Star program, including:

  • Participation
  • Achievement
  • Personal success
  • Displaying spirit and passion for the sport
  • Striving for new goals
  • Achieving balance within skating and in other areas of life
  • Giving back to the sport by assisting at club level (program assistant, volunteering for club events, etc.)

Section Podium Pathway Athlete Award

This award recognizes individual skaters or a pair or ice dance team that exhibits spirit, dedication, and determination, and is a positive role model for other athletes.

This award will be presented to one person in each of the nine Skate AB|NT|NU Regions with an overall Section Winner selected by the Skate AB|NT|NU Awards Selection Committee.

The Award will be presented to the Section winner at the Section Annual Awards Banquet.

The Region and Section recipients must meet the following criteria:

Criteria

  • An individual skater who is under the age of 16 as of July 1 of the current competitive season OR a pairs or ice dance team under the age of 18 as of July 1 of the current competitive season
  • An individual, pairs, or ice dance team who exhibits spirit, dedication, determination or other favorable qualities
  • A minimum pre-novice competitor with a top-ten finish at the Sectional level in the current competitive season
  • A positive role model for other athletes
  • An individual, pairs or ice dance team who combines off-ice and on-ice training in order to meet his/her/their competitive goals

Section Program Assistant Award

The purpose of the Section Program Assistant Award is to recognize dedicated and passionate program assistants who continuously share Skate Canada's vision with all participants of the program. This award is presented to individuals who are not only great assets to the coaching team on the ice, but also show their commitment off the ice by providing support and assistance to the club and its registrants.

This award will be presented to one person in each of the nine Skate AB|NT|NU Regions with an overall Section Winner selected by the Skate AB|NT|NU Awards Selection Committee.

The Award will be presented to the Section winner at the Section Annual Awards Banquet.

The Region and Section recipients must meet the following criteria:

Criteria

A currently active program assistant who:

  • Has made a significant contribution to his/her/their club by having assisted skaters, coaches and/or the club executive with programming both on and off the ice
  • Is an excellent role model/mentor who inspires others to embrace the joy of skating
  • Displays a potential for a long-term commitment to the sport of figure skating in the community in a coaching or volunteer role

Section Adaptive Skater Award

This is a new award for the Section, being presented for the first time at the 2024 Awards Banquet is to recognize a skater in the Section who participates as an adaptive skater and demonstrates a passion and a positive attitude towards the sport.

This award will be presented to one skater in the Section who meets the following criteria:

Criteria

Individuals who:

  • Participates as an adaptive skater and/or Special Olympics skater.
  • Demonstrates a passion for the sport.
  • Contributes to a welcoming and positive skating environment.
  • Strives for personal growth and new goals.
  • Inspires the skating community.

Section Special Olympics Skater Award

This award recognizes the dedication and achievements of Special Olympics skaters within the Section. The recipient will be selected for their commitment, passion and spirit. Skate AB|NT|NU partners with Special Olympics Alberta to annually recognize a skater registered as a Special Olympic athlete, who participates, inspires and leads whether at the Club level or National level.

Spirit and Passion of Skating Award (Adult Skater)

The Section Adult Skater Award is to recognize Adult skaters who have demonstrated a commitment and passion for the sport. Recipients of this award have displayed passion for the sport and have achieved success throughout the season in relation to their personal skill development, growth, and goals.

This award will be presented to one skater in the Section who meets the following criteria:

Criteria

  • Be 18 years of age or older and must not have registered or competed in a Podium Pathway (Pre-Novice or higher) category at a Sectional qualifying competition in the current skating season.
  • Reflect the essence of the Active for Life/Competitive for Life pathways:
    • Active participation
    • Personal success
    • Displaying spirit and passion for the sport
    • Striving for new goals
    • Achieving balance within skating and in other areas of life
    • Giving back to the sport
  • Be an exemplary role model and inspiration for other volunteers, skaters and/or coaches, officials.
  • Show great interest in making the sports' future direction better.

Synchronized Skating Leadership Award

The Section award is presented to a synchronized skater who has demonstrated determination and commitment to the sport of synchronized skating. Recipients of this award should display passion for the sport, personal skill development and consistently contribute to the culture and/or success of the team(s).

Gateway Skating Club Post-Secondary Bursary

This award was created to celebrate the Gateway Skating Club’s 50 year anniversary in 2014 as a registered club with Skate Canada. The purpose of the award is to encourage skaters to continue competing while pursuing post-secondary education, keeping with the principles of Canadian Sport for Life.

Sectional Legacy Scholarship

This scholarship is  given to an athlete/team who has achieved success over several competitive seasons. This athlete/team through their body of work, demonstrates a dedication to the sport, works hard to perfect their skill and has represented their club proudly within the Section.

Barbara Graham International Award

This award is given to an athlete or team who has reached greatness at the Provincial and National level and is  focused on achieving excellence at the International level. The athlete or athletes represent the best in sportsmanship, dedication to their sport and are role models for all skaters.

National Athlete Impact Award

This award will recognize a National Team or Nextgen athlete (in any discipline) who demonstrates exceptional behavior, leadership or a performance that inspires and galvanizes their teammates, the skating community or the public. This individual must have competed at an international event that season and demonstrated the Skate Canada values of excellence, integrity, collaboration and/or innovation.

Criteria

Nominees must meet the minimum criteria defined below and must consent to their nomination.

  • A National Team or NextGen athlete in any discipline
  • Demonstrated exceptional behavior, leadership or a performance that inspires and galvanizes their teammates, the skating community or the public.
  • Must have competed at an international event that season
  • Embodies and exemplifies Skate Canada values of integrity, collaboration, excellence and innovation This award will be presented to one person at the Skate Canada Ice Summit. Skate Canada reserves the right to not present this award in any given year. The Skate Canada President, chair of the High-Performance Development Committee, Senior Director Performance Excellence, High-Performance Director and NextGen Director will select the winner.

Athlete Bursary Awards

Winnie Silverthorne Award – $1000.00 total
Presented annually to a skater or team that placed highest at the Canadian Tire National Skating Championships and is recommended by the Athlete Development Committee.

Kurt Browning Award – $500.00
Presented annually to the highest placing Junior Women at the Canadian Tire National Skating Championships.

Brian Pockar Award – $500.00
Presented annually to the highest placing Juvenile Man (U12 or U14) at the Skate AB/NT/NU Sectional Championships.

Shantell Hale Award – $250.00 each
Presented annually to the highest placing Juvenile U12 Women and Juvenile U14 Women at the Skate: AB/NT/NU Sectional Championships.

Barbara Graham Award – $1000.00 total
Presented annually to the highest placing Pre-Novice or Novice pair or dance team at Skate Canada Challenge or the Canadian Tire National Skating Championships.

Pat Fischer Award – $500.00 
Presented annually to the highest placing Pre-Novice Man at Skate Canada Challenge.

Sue Cutmore Memorial Spirit Award – $500.00 each
Presented annually to the top placing STAR 5 U10 and U13 Girls at the Skate AB I NT I NU StarSkate Championships.
